Group Judgment Processes and Outcomes in Videoconferencing vs. Face-to-Face Groups
نویسندگان
چکیده
Groups of size three completed an estimation task by interacting either face-to-face or via a videoconferencing system. Results show significant differences were found in the confidence attached by groups to their decisions. Compared to face-to-face groups, vide-conferencing groups showed smaller increases in confidence in their decisions, especially if they were instructed to discuss their beliefs and assumptions underlying their estimates and not the estimates themselves. However, this confidence was more appropriate than that of the face-to-face groups. Further, video-conferencing groups reported modifying more of their beliefs during discussion. However, there were no significant differences between the two interaction media on the following outcome dimensions: accuracy; over-confidence; size of credible intervals; or improvement over average initial individual estimates. Implications for the design and application of advanced systems for decision-making support and research are discussed

The Impact of Communication Medium on Virtual Team Group Process
AbstrAct Organizations must provide appropriate work group structures and communication technologies in order for work groups to function effectively and efficiently. This study investigated the hypotheses that team structure (e.g., fully collocated teams vs. virtual teams) and communication mode (i.e., face-to-face vs. videoconferencing) will impact virtual team group processes (e.g., team ori...
متن کاملTelehealth Interventions Delivering Home-based Support Group Videoconferencing: Systematic Review
BACKGROUND Group therapy and education and support sessions are used within health care across a range of disciplines such as chronic disease self-management and psychotherapy interventions. However, there are barriers that constrain group attendance, such as mobility, time, and distance. Using videoconferencing may overcome known barriers and improve the accessibility of group-based interventi...
متن کاملExpanding the Bandwidth of Virtual Teams Via a Shared Social Construction
Computer-mediated communication systems (CMC) offer alternative means of communication within and across organisational contexts. Collaboration between virtual teams which meet via computer-mediated technologies, often takes place in a context where the teams are geographically distributed and the members in the teams have not met in a face-to-face meeting. In this context promoting effective c...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Meeting Outcomes in Virtual vs. Face-to-Face Teams: A Comparison Study in China
As virtual teams become more and more important in organizations, understanding how to improve virtual team outcomes is vital to project success. This study examines how virtual teams interacting via videoconferencing systems may enhance their team outcomes in a Chinese cultural context. The results reveal that traditional face-to-face interaction outperformed videoconferencing teams when both ...
متن کاملExploring Collaboration in Group-to-Group Videoconferencing
Prior work on videoconferencing shows that various design changes can have profound impacts on group dynamics. In order to further explore the available design space, we report on a qualitative study that compares behaviour of groups in two group-to-group videoconferencing environments and face-to-face communication during a complex social dilemma game. There are pronounced differences in parti...
